The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Canada Day Tradition Ride to Niagara (Hairshirt Lite Training Edition)
100km or 200 km in one day!
Start location: Burlington GO station south parking lot, 2101 Fairview St, Burlington. Ride leader: Paul Min
Huge Shout Out to Jimmy Yeung who started this iconic traditional ride to Niagara Falls with lunch at Taps Brewhouse.
The outbound route climbs the Niagara Escarpment from Stoney Creek and then goes along the ridge, mostly on Ridge Road. Then it's Ball's Falls, Effingham Hill, following the Welland River and finally entering Niagara Falls from the south. This leg follows the Niagara Parkway northwards to Queen Street. At Queen St switch over to the return route. (Lunch at Taps Brewhouse).
Route on RideWithGPS: Burlington to Niagara Falls
The return route from Niagara Falls continues from Queen St on the Niagara Parkway heading northward to Niagara-on-the-Lake, then westward skirting Lake Ontario. Route on RideWithGPS: Niagara Falls to Burlington
The full route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40610689. Load the full route into your Garmin or RWGPS app to get the entire ride into one Strava file. However, if your device tends to get confused when the out and back routes overlap, it may be better to load the outbound and return routes separately.
If interested, Taps Brewhouse is on Queen St, 0.8 km west of the point where the outbound route ends and the return route begins.
Sunset will be at 9:02 pm. If there is any chance you will still be riding after 8:30 pm, you must have lights, front and rear. Reflector Vest is also a good idea.
The return leg is routed on the Hamilton Beach Trail. This is a pleasant alternative to the usual Hairshirt route which only follows roads - HOWEVER you will need to slow down because of people and pets on the Trail.
Taking the GO train back to Burlington. What if you need to exit the ride at the half-way point? The Niagara Falls train station, at Bridge St and Erie Ave, is only 6 blocks from Taps Brewhouse. Click here for the Updated GO Schedule. There are Presto pay stations on the platform, or tickets can be purchased in the station. If you use Presto, be sure to tap off at Burlington, or you will be charged for the distance to Toronto.
You MUST register in order to participate in this ride.
If you need to cancel your registration, try to do so by noon the day before the ride.
If registration is full try the waitlist and check back regularly for possible cancellations.

Do you want to increase your cycling skill level? Be safer and more defensive rider Improve your safety on the road? Increase your confidence about riding on city streets? Whether you are a new or a long-term rider, there is always something to learn, some skills to improve, and, admit it, some bad habits to unlearn. Perhaps you are a TBN ride leader, but you are uncertain about what skills / behaviours to demonstrate and encourage as you lead your ride.
CAN-BIKE provides structured classes to help you with all this and more! CAN-BIKE provides a Canada-wide skills curriculum as defined by Cycling Canada, and is recommended by provincial governments and many Canadian cities.
Our CAN-BIKE classes are open to all TBN members.
When you register for this theory class, you will receive an email detailing how to complete an additional required online prerequisite education session. This will take you approximately 45 minutes. Please complete this ONE WEEK before the Friday session. If you fail to complete by this time you may be removed from the event.
We are not limiting attendance for the Friday Evening Theory Class. The Theory Class will cover the guiding principles of safe cycling: See, Be Seen, Be Predictable. Those principles then tie into the main CAN-BIKE mantra Maneuverability, Visibility, Predictability, and Communication (MVPC). The Theory Class also cover urban riding, rural riding, group riding, cold weather riding, warm weather riding, nighttime riding, human kinesiology/energy systems, and navigating.
Note: In order to complete either Level 3 or Level 4, students must also register and complete the complementing practical session. See https://www.tbn.ca/event-6188081 for that event on July 5 and 6.
The ride starts from the passenger pick up/drop off building at Kipling subway station north parking lot (access from Dundas St West) and meanders through pleasant parts of Etobicoke to Eglinton Ave (warning: some gravel trails) and north to Weston for a coffee/washroom break. The route loops back to the start mostly along attractive Etobicoke streets. About 33kms- should finish about 12:30 to 1pm.
PLEASE REGISTER: If you have not registered for the ride, you may NOT join the ride. For all TBN rides a helmet is mandatory.
If you have registered but can't attend, log in, click on "Already registered", then cancel. Come at 9:15 to be ready for a prompt 9:30am start. Remember to bring your helmet and spare inner tube. Unregistered riders CANNOT ride with the group.

The first day will cover skills common to both Level 3 and Level 4. If you are intending to only take the Level 3 Practical Class the next day, please use the registration option for Level 3. You will be given an evaluation of your skills at the end of day 1.
The second day of the practical session will cover advanced skills. Rides will be longer and on busier roads. Your application of the theory presented will be carefully evaluated (Road Test). Your mastery of the advanced bike handling skills introduced on Day 1 and 2 will be evaluated. There will also be a written test at the end of Day 2. To be certified at Level 4, you will be required to have 70% or higher each of the Road Test, skills components, and the written test.
If, based on your skills shown on Day 1, the instructors deem that you will be able to complete the 2nd day, you will be advised to attend on Day 2.
If you previously took the Level 3 class in past, and wish to get Level 4 certified you must attend both Day 1 (Level 3) and Day 2 practical sessions.
If you are interested in becoming a CAN-BIKE Level 5 (Instructor), you must score 90% on the Bike Skills, 80% on the written test, and 90% on the Road test.
This class is an in-person, on-bike follow-on to the Theory class. We are limiting attendance for the Practical Class to 24 attendees. We will spend approximately 50% of our time in a quiet parking lot practicing bike handling skills and other on-bike topics, and 50% of our time riding around the streets putting to practice the skills that we have covered. We will have a couple of short breaks, plus a lunch break.
You will be required to sign a CAN-BIKE specific waiver. You can see the copy of the waiver at: https://1drv.ms/f/s!Ao0KxfTr52KBiLBwy6gsDSTFH7q-mg?e=nztm1e
