Niagara Bike & Hike, Victoria Day long weekend
Friday May 17 to Monday May 20 – four days for
$275
Last day to register Wednesday, May 15, 2024
This weekend is a chance to get the 2024 cycling season off to a great
start by joining one of TBN’s most popular rides along the quiet roads
and off-road paved trails of the Niagara Region. This year we have 34
spots - note that this trip sold out quickly in previous years.
Note that as these are no-drop rides, all riders are expected to be able
to maintain a comfortable pace of 18 kms per hour or higher. You are
also expected to ride with a spare inner tube in the event of a flat and also to be able to change your tire.
Accommodations
We’ll once again stay at the comfortable Niagara College residence
near Niagara-on-the-Lake. You’ll have your own bedroom in a shared
suite, complete with a shared full bathroom and shared kitchenette,
including a refrigerator. Note a change in room furnishings from
previous years. In each suite, one bedroom has a double bed, desk with
chair and satellite TV. The second bedroom has two single loft over desk/bunk style beds.
There is a Tim Hortons and McDonald's in the large outlet mall, just
a three minute drive or ride away. For people looking to keep costs
down, consider bringing your own supplies for breakfasts.
Note that given the shared bathroom and common area, attendees
will be invited to select the other TBN member with whom they
would like to share the suite.
Friday May 17 Warmup Ride
For those who can get away early, as in past years on Friday
afternoon at 2 pm we will once again start with an optional warmup
ride along the bike path from Niagara on the Lake to Niagara Falls
and back, covering about 50 kms.
Friday’s ride will be followed by a group supper at Play Bar & Grille at
the White Oaks Resort, which is located nearby. Alternatively you are
welcome to organize informal group dinners at restaurants in the
area.
Saturday May 18
Saturday’s rides feature long and short distances and run along the
little-known paved off-road trail beside the Welland Canal, with a
stop for lunch along the way.
After their ride, participants are invited to meet for an informal get
together and beer at the Niagara College Teaching Brewery, located
next the location where we are staying. Each participant will receive
a $15 gift card for the beverage of your choice and there will also be
snacks courtesy of TBN. Alternatively participants can visit Niagara
on the Lake or do a winetasting at one of the nearby wineries.
This will be followed by pizza, salad and dessert in the patio area
outside the Niagara College dining room. Pizza and soft drinks will
be supplied. In addition we’ll be asking people to bring a salad or
dessert. Please bring your own main course if you don’t like pizza, as
well as anything stronger than pop to drink.
Something else to bear in mind is that in past years some members
followed this by a drive to Niagara Falls to watch the fireworks over
the gorge.
Sunday May 19
Sunday’s rides (again, long and short) begin from a remote start 15
minutes away in Niagara Falls along the paved trail beside the
Niagara River Parkway – with a stop for lunch en route.
For anyone interested, we’ll again be convening at the Niagara
College Teaching Brewery after we get back.
Sunday evening will feature group suppers at local restaurants, with
a variety of cuisines and price points to choose from. Last year these
dinners were very popular. Alternatively, some riders could repeat
what we did on past rides and polish off the left overs from
Saturday’s pot luck.
Monday May 20
Monday is your chance to join a final short early morning ride, do
some hiking along the Bruce Trail, visit the Outlet Mall nearby or
tour some wineries. To beat long weekend traffic, most riders head
home by noon.
For anyone wanting to come out a day early or to extend your stay,
contact Niagara College directly to make a reservation, mentioning
that you are part of the TBN group staying from Friday to Sunday
nights.
Registration for the Niagara Bike & Hike ride will open at 10 am on
Saturday April 20th. If you’re interested, plan to book early as the
past this ride has sold out quickly.

NOTE: The route has been revised slightly to avoid a road closure on Beechgrove Drive and some information has been added to the map.
New-ish ROUTE! New-ish START POINT!
For this new-last-year version of a favourite TBN ride we will be starting from the Victoria Park subway, eliminating the big hill from the Beaches up to Kingston Road. We will be using a bit of the SMR route to Guildwood but departing from it to explore some trails not currently on any other TBN rides.
The Highland Creek Trail reopened last year after being closed south of Morningside Park for sewer work. However, at the very bottom of the trail at Lake Ontario the part of the Waterfront Trail that heads west is currently closed again to finish repairing the damage from the high water levels in 2017. Assuming that it isn't open (entirely possible) the map shows the alternative route which exits the trail at Lawrence.
The return route from Guildwood also departs from the norm and stays north of Kingston Road for a change.
Lunch is at Tim Hortons near the two thirds point so you might want to bring something to snack on to keep your energy up. You may still wish to bring your own lunch and snacks to avoid lineups and contact.
Meet for a 10 am departure from the parking lot of the Victoria Park TTC station, located on the east side of Victoria Park Avenue, one block north of Danforth Avenue.
If the ride is cancelled due to weather or other reasons, notice of the cancellation will be posted on the website around 8 am Sunday. Please check before leaving for the ride.
The Ride with GPS map for the route is linked below, as well as a simplified cue sheet. The linked cue sheet has been optimised for Sunday Urban Rollers.

The route was revised last year to avoid the steep hill up to Casa Loma and to take advantage of some of the recent cycling infrastructure such as the new bike lanes on lower Bayview and Richmond. Two route lengths (84 km and 102 km) are available. Both routes stop at Mercato Italian Bakery in Bolton for an optional lunch stop.
The beginning and end portions of the two rides are the same. The longer ride is essentially a "loop" off the medium length ride. This means riders can choose during the ride to do a long or medium distance, if they wish. This means you should also bring cue sheets for all routes you think you might ride. Likewise, for GPS units, you should download all routes you think you might ride.
Meet at Finch Subway Station, "Finch" west parking lot on the north side of Hendon Ave, just west of Yonge St.
N.B. If you are travelling north on Yonge St, keep going past Finch Ave and turn left onto Hendon Ave. The parking lot is on the right near 18 Hendon Ave, North York.

May Pub Quiz
You are invited to attend the monthly trivia night at The Prenup Pub on Thursday, May 30th. Please register before Monday, May 27th at midnight.
The Prenup Pub is one of the best pubs in the city. It’s a Belgian style pub with a wonderful atmosphere, great food, and extraordinary draft beer, all at reasonable prices. In fact, the atmosphere is actually free! The draft beer list consists of 70 quality brews, of which most are European. There is also a sizeable wine list. The food menu is also extensive and also mostly European, with French, Belgian, Italian and German specialties. There are also quite a few vegetarian and vegan dishes.
The schedule for the evening is as follows:
This will be an unusual pub quiz in that the participants will choose the categories before the quiz begins. Virtually any category is possible, including history, geography, 80s music, Soviet fashion, marine biology, supramolecular chemistry, and even cycling. The teams or four or five will brainstorm possible categories, and we all vote to determine the four most popular topics. Quiz questions in the four categories will be generated by AI.
The Prenup Pub is conveniently located at 191 College Street, just a five-minute walk west of Queen’s Park subway station. There also is street parking available, especially on McCaul Street. If more than 25 people register, we will be on second floor of the pub. If not, we will be in the west room on the main floor. View the map here.
As with all TBN events, we need volunteers. In this case, we are looking for one volunteer to help Ken with setting up and managing the quiz. To sign up, choose the Volunteer option. You will need to show up at 6:30.
Please note the early-season 9:30 am start time.
This ride offers a no-drop option for cyclists who prefer a more leisurely pace. The no-drop group will wait at turns and after big hills, but we expect you to be prepared to complete the route, with just a few pauses to regroup. Please arrive a little early so you can introduce yourself to the ride leader and tell them you want to join their group.
For other riders, this a Tourist level ride, and you should be prepared to be self-sufficient. If you are uncertain whether this level is appropriate to your riding level, click here.
Routes 48km, 69km (Preferred), 82km: click here.
Ride leader: Martin Lansche
For those following the the 69 and 82 km routes, you'll take quiet country roads to the Hockley Valley General Store for a lunch/washroom break. The short route includes a couple of km of rail-trail with a mid-ride stop in Tottenham at Salvatore's Bakery (and coffee shop). All 3 routes cross Highway 9 at stop lights for safety reasons.
Washroom facilities: portable toilets are sometimes available in the parking area, or at the nearby park to the north. Alternatively, there are nearby Tim's & McD's on Hwy 27.
We have been riding around Toronto and the Don Valley for over many seasons, and the streets are very quiet with low traffic and we generally cross arterials at traffic lights. We will ride quiet streets, some park paths & bike only connections through North York and area for this summer ride.

Ride the DVP while helping to ensure the safety of the other riders: BE A MARSHAL or ROUTE AMBASSADOR (scroll down for role definition)
Event Organizers: Terry Walsh & Jerry Fisch
Event Assistant: Dawn Dom
MEETING TIME: Staggering Start Time 7am 8am 9am 10am 11 am. New this year. Check email for your time slot and ride partner.
STAGGERING LEADERS: arrive one hour before start time no exceptions.
MARSHALS & AMBASSADORS: arrive at TBN Meeting Location at Enercare (see picture below) 1 HR before start time (must be ready to ride)
Important Locations:
MEETING LOCATION: west side of the Galleria space outdoors, right near the ride start. It has a covered awning. Ambassadors and marshals will pick up their T-shirts and armbands there.
FREE VOLUNTEER BUFFET LUNCH will be provided by Baycrest: all TBN volunteers are invited to the lunch buffet in the volunteer rest area, Salon 105, which is accessed from the main doors on the south side of the Enercare Centre (the Galleria space). This area will be clearly marked as the volunteer check-in location.
In addition, TBN is hosting a BEER & WING VOLUNTEERS APPRECIATION NIGHT for you. To register, click REGISTER HERE FOR BEER & WINGS PARTY. The cost is covered by Baycrest.
Ride Ambassadors: our eyes and ears on the route. Ambassadors will be provided T-shirts.
Ambassadors will be given a Central Control number to call in to with any information relating to cyclists in need, potential issues on the route of any kind and generally any information that they feel would be valuable for the event organizers to have.
Ride Marshals: are our “mobile safe riding team” for Baycrest, wearing TBN jerseys, plus supplied armbands.
Ride Marshals work in teams of two and basically look for cyclists who are riding unsafely; when they see this happening they ride up alongside the offending cyclist and politely let them know they are riding in an unsafe manner (most don't even realize they are doing it) and to please slow down/stop swerving in and out of traffic/stop texting on your phone and generally cease any other observed unsafe activity.
Once a marshal has made the first warning it is best to fall back a bit and observe that the individual is following the warning; if not the marshal can then ride up to them again and say that if they continue the next call will be to Toronto Police Services who will then pull them off the course or at a minimum be waiting for them at the finish line. This rarely is required but it can be a very effective tool.
In the unlikely event that both of those warnings don't work, marshals are asked to call Central Control and provide a clear, detailed description of the individual as best they can. Central Control will take it from there.
